Navigate 1.1.1 -- Delineate between instruction methods

Asynchronous classes are ones completed by the learner without same time, same place interaction with a teacher. They are completed most often in a linear fashion, often "gated" by completion, so that for example the test for one unit/module must be successfully completed before the next module opens. Many schools using this model require periodic synchronous conversations, sometimes called "Discussion Based Assessments," before moving on after a module.

The ultimate Synchronous class is the brick and mortar classroom, but its online counterpart may make use of communications platforms like Skype, or webinar platforms like Blackboard Collaborate, to meet same time, same (online) place for lecture or discussion/demonstration.

Navigate 1.2.1 -- Describe roles and functions in online learning environments

The graphic on the assignment page says it best (click to visit):
SIS and LMS in a graphic nutshell
I'm not even convinced I need to add anything here, excepting that our LMS at my school is Blackboard, and the document used in the lesson might be able to use some updating, as Pearson bought Blackboard around the time it was published. Also, I don't see much there regarding student support, an aspect we have worked very hard on at MNPS Virtual School and which is constantly under revision toward continuous improvement.

In an online learning environment, a teacher who has had experience in as many of the roles in each arena as possible will likely be more effective than a teacher who has only been a student, or even only an administrator.

Very often, the big challenges are to get the SIS and the LMS to work together seamlessly. This may be a pie in the sky goal.
